May is KidSport Month and the Melfort KidSport celebrated on Saturday, May 27. The organization hosted a barbecue and drop in street hockey event on Manitoba Street next to Northeast Source For Sports.
“The idea isn’t really even fundraising we just want raise awareness about the organization for KidSport Month,” Melfort KidSport committee president Mike Lang said.
The Melfort committee supports children and families who face financial obstacles to playing sports.
“Our Melfort committee deals with children that attend school in Melfort, they attend here most of them do live in Melfort,” Lang said.
Lang explained that the organization has been quite busy helping out a large number of children participating in sports.
In 2016 KidSport Melfort assisted 84 youths, broken down to 44 males and 40 females and grants totaled $19,122.
The top funded sports for KidSport Melfort were tae kwon do with 21 percent, hockey had 18 percent, basketball had 11 percent, figure skating had 10 percent and all other sports had 23 percent.
“We really do fund a wide variety of sports,” he added.
