It’s estimated that 20% of Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. The most common illnesses are depression and anxiety. While some people seek out medication for their illnesses, we know that physical activity is as effective as medication in managing the effects of mild to moderate depression and anxiety. For youth dealing with mental illness, participating in physical activities not only improves their skills and physical development, it also improves their mental health. Having positive mental health means one is able to enjoy life, be resilient, strive for balance, and work to achieve one’s full potential.

While some activities can be engaged in without cost, the cost of participation in others can be prohibitive. For some young members of the North Shore community, accessing funds to participate in activities that provide assistance in their mental health journey can be difficult.

The purpose of the KidSport North Shore and CMHA North and West Vancouver Pub Night is to focus attention on North Shore youth and to provide them with resources to adopt a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Funds raised this night will go to support two programs committed to this goal:

The Canadian Mental Health Association’s STEPS program helps North Shore teenagers struggling with mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety engage in physical activity to improve their mental health. Activities include hiking, paddle boarding, snowshoeing, yoga and kayaking. Groups meet weekly to engage in a group activity and learn skills and strategies to deal effectively with their mental health challenges. The youth are also offered one to one meetings with the STEPS youth coordinator. This connection gives youth the opportunity to work on their goals in a safe and nonjudgmental way.

KidSport North Shore believes that the primary goal of all children’s sport programming is for each child to have fun and to want to play again next season. Children should feel there will always be a place for sport in their lives and that sport will always have a place for them. The KidSport program has been created to help overcome financial obstacles preventing some young people from participating in organized sport. KidSport North Shore identifies needs in the community, raises funds, and supports programs that create new opportunities for young people “So All Kids Can Play”.

Please join us on October 6, 2016 at the Narrows Pub located at 1970 Spicer Road in North Vancouver. Together we will assist North Shore youth to be able to participate in programs including their favorite sports and activities. World Cup and Olympic downhill ski racer, Steve Podborski will be our host for the evening which includes silent and live auctions, raffles, inspirational speakers, music and dancing.
