About Kidsport North Shore

Who is KidSport

KidSport™ was established by Sport BC in 1993 and is a community based sport charity. Since its inception in British Columbia, KidSport™ has grown to include national and provincial/territorial chapters operating across Canada. There are now more than 150 local community chapters that have raised in excess of $5 million dollars and provided a season of sport to more than 45,000 Canadian children in 65 different sports.

The North Shore chapter of KidSport is comprised of eight members who reside, or at least did when they started volunteering for the chapter, on the North Shore.  Until Squamish initiated their community chapter, the NSKS chapter assisted financially challenged children from Deep Cove to Squamish.

Our goal is to increase community awareness and to become the beneficiaries of local fundraising events.  An annual fundraiser is hosted by KSNS to bring together partners, supportive community leaders and supporters, for an evening of fun to raise funds – “So All Kids Can Play!”

It is through the tireless efforts and support of the chapter members, that the North Shore chapter is able to assist approximately 150 North Shore children annually, to play their sport.  Chapter members believe in the value of playing organized sport – the life-long skills, friendships and good health practices – and each member is proud knowing, that they assist financially challenged children in our community to experience this as well – and we’re building healthy communities together.

Introduction – Our Philosophy & Mission

Our Goal…

The primary goal of all children’s sport programming is for each child to have fun and to want to play again next season. Children should feel there will always be a place for sport in their lives and that sport will always have a place for them. The KidSport™ Program has been created to help overcome financial obstacles preventing some young people from participating in organized sport.

Our Work…

KidSport™ identifies needs in the community, raises funds, and supports programs that create new opportunities for young people “So All Kids Can Play.”

Our Belief…

Young people can learn more than athletic skills from sport. Sport provides a lifelong opportunity for self-expression and self-discovery. Sport challenges can teach children the value of leadership, desire, planning, practice, hard work, honesty, sacrifice, dedication, positive thinking and self-confidence. Sport emphasizes exercise, commitment, discipline, and conditioning, and can start children on the path to a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle begun at a young age can last a lifetime and benefit not only the child but the rest of the community.

Our Challenge…

Child poverty is on the rise making it difficult for many children to access sport. As well, Statistics Canada has recently reported an alarming decline in participation rates of organized sport in large part due to the cost. Ensuring that children have access to sport, and the values and skills that sport teaches, is more critical than ever.

Our Aim…

KidSport™ helps provide children between the ages of five and eighteen access to sport opportunities and experiences in both team and individual sports “So All Kids Can Play.”

Our Mission…

KidSport™ is a non-profit organization that is part of a national and provincial network of community based volunteer groups whose goal is to ensure that kids in financial need have access to the positive experience of sport and physical activity. We believe that sport and physical activity provides a life-long opportunity for self-expression, goal setting, dedication, positive thinking and increased self confidence for kids.
