Cheryl Browne – Chairperson
Cheryl shows compassion and energy as a volunteer who wears many hats. The Chair of the KidSport Kelowna chapter since 2008, she is also the go to person for fundraising, events, volunteer coordination and pretty much everything else that goes on at KidSport Kelowna. Cheryl is always looking for way to be creative and make sure that the kids are the beneficiary of all her hard work.
Shael Bourne – Committee Volunteer
Shael recently joined KidSport Kelowna and brings tons of enthusiasm and passion to the table! She is a recent graduate from the University of British Columbia and a retired volleyball player. She is actively involved with Volleyball BC and loves the idea of giving more kids the opportunity to get involved with all sports, not just volleyball! Kelowna is becoming her home and she cannot wait to see more kids becoming involved in local sports. She is very eager to contribute to the continual growth of KidSport Kelowna.
Jay Christensen – Committee Volunteer
Jay started his football career with the Okanagan Sun Junior Football Club from 1982 to 1985. He comes from a background of 10 years in professional football where he had a great deal of success, winning the Grey Cup in 1993 with the Edmonton Eskimos, and also spending time with the Calgary Stampeders, BC Lions and Ottawa Rough Riders. In 1990 with the BC Lions Jay was the Most Outstanding Canadian, the Extra Effort Player of the Year, and Tom Pate nominee for CFL Man of the Year. He Coached the Okanagan Sun for 10 years helping to win a National Championship in 2000. Jay continues to share his passion for football by serving as general manager of the Okanagan Sun. Jay is a frequent media commentator and presenter on financial planning, as he is an Investment Specialist with Valley First Credit Union. Jay sits on the Board of Pacific Sport which led to his involvement with the KidSport committee, as he is very passionate about opportunities for kids to develop through and enjoy all sports.
Mark Turchyn – Committee Volunteer
Mark joined KidSport Kelowna in 2017 and works primarily on the administrative side, processing applications and managing the charity's finances. Mark is a Professional Engineer and currently works as a Director for Interior Health. Mark, his wife Lisa and their children recently moved to Kelowna after traveling and working internationally in the Middle East and Russia for 11 years. Mark joined KidSport as a means of giving back to the community and strongly believes that organized sport plays a significant role in childhood development.
Eric Panchy – Committee Volunteer
Eric recently moved to Kelowna from Calgary after retiring in 2018. Before retiring, Eric spent 40 years in the Resource industry culminating his career as a Senior Executive for the past 15 years. He adds experience in leadership, strategic planning, budgeting and corporate liaisons to his volunteer position with KidSport. Eric also brings a great passion and energy to his volunteer position and looks forward to working with community partners, KidSport members and volunteers.
Kylaina Afonso – Committee Volunteer
Kylaina has been an athlete all her life – sport has been an immense influence over the years. Since graduating in 2015 from the University of British Columbia – Okanagan, she has spent her time in the financial world with Valley First, a Division of First West Credit Union. Throughout her personal and work life she has been regularly involved in supporting the community. The opportunity to support getting kids into sport to potentially experience the same positive influence she has experienced is exciting! Kylaina is looking forward to her involvement with KidSport and is thrilled to do her part to support the sport community.
Amber Gilbert – Committee Volunteer
Amber has been involved with KidSport Kelowna since 2006, when she was working as the Athlete & Coach Services Coordinator for PacificSport Okanagan. She has remained on the KidSport board in an event support capacity ever since. Amber has been involved and benefited from sport since she was a kid, and now she has three kids busy in sports. Giving kids the opportunity to participate in sports has long term positive outcomes. Her athletic background is in Track and Field, and has coached kids and facilitated coaching courses for over 20 years. Amber is thankful our community has a local KidSport chapter to ensure these opportunities exist for kids and families who may face financial barriers.
Allecia Becker – Committee Volunteer
Allecia is a recent Bachelor of Business graduate from Okanagan College and is currently working for a public accounting firm. As a mother of two active girls, she was drawn to KidSport. She has found the impact that sport has had on her children has been invaluable. She loved the idea of being able to help provide other children with the opportunity to participate in sport. She is proud to be a member of such a great organization.
