KidSport Wood Buffalo would like to announce a new chapter in our organizations journey. At the end of July - Meryl Makinson will be leaving KidSport to pursue further studies out east. Meryl’s contribution to KidSport over the past 20 months has been remarkable. Thanks to her tireless efforts we have seen substantial growth and significantly increased our impact in the community. Her mark will forever be left on the organization and we wish her all the best in her future.

We are very happy to announce the appointment of Jamal-e-Fatima Rafat as the new Executive Director. We are confident Jamal will continue where Meryl left off and continue to progress KidSport Wood Buffalo towards achieving our Vision of equitable access to sport where all kids are inspired to achieve.

Jamal brings a considerable amount of experience and expertise to the team. A brief introduction is below:

Jamal comes from a strong social profit background and an equally inspiring local government sector.

She moved to the region in February 2018 after completing her term coordinating a Canada 150 funded project for the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan. She hails from the ‘land of the living skies’ Regina, SK, where she spent 10 years of her career and her life working with organizations such as the Regina Open Door Society, the City of Regina and United Way Regina. She is an ardent community volunteer who has assisted with organizations like YWCA Regina, Regina Citizen’s Police Academy, the Islamic Association of SK and the Terry Fox Run. More currently, she was employed at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo for the past ten months.  A ‘calling’ motivated her to pursue a career with KidSport Wood Buffalo, which she is looking forward to as a return to the world of social profits.

Jamal holds a Masters in Science, a Certificate in Public Relations and a Certificate in Volunteer Management and we couldn’t be more excited to have her. Work to her is only part of a life she enjoys with her husband and her cat, Mia. She loves to travel and read. She has found a new passion in creative writing and meaningful storytelling.

Please join us in thanking Meryl for her contribution to KidSport Wood Buffalo and welcoming Jamal Rafat to the team!
