KidSport Calgary demand for assistance up over 80 per cent; the biggest increase in their 21 year history

CALGARY, Alberta. – Many Calgary and area children may be sitting on the sidelines this year as the number of qualified families seeking financial assistance for sport registration fees is skyrocketing.   Since the start of this year, KidSport Calgary has seen an 80 per cent increase in the number applications for financial assistance. They have had to decrease their available funding per child, and for the first time in their 21 year history, they are facing the possibility of having to turn eligible kids away.

“Quite simply, many young athletes, many of whom are considered ‘at risk’, won’t be involved in organized sport this year if we are unable to raise funding. We need the community to rally around the families we support and help us ensure we can continue to provide access to sport and all the amazing benefits it provides the youth in our community,” said Wilson Acton, chair of the KidSport Calgary Board of Directors.

The KidSport Society of Calgary released its 2015 Year in Review on Thursday, showcasing the amazing impact they have had on area youth thanks in large part to the generosity of local donors, partners and volunteers last year.

Highlights of the 2015 Year in Review include:

  • 4,221 kids supported with registration fees into 50 different sports (a year over year increase of 24 %).

  • Over $1,24 million distributed to more than 406 different community sport clubs (a year over year increase of 35%).

“We are extremely proud of our history and the positive difference we are making the lives of local kids through sport. We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. That’s why we need the continued support in what will most certainly be our most challenging year yet,” said Acton. “We knew as an organization that demand would be higher in 2016 even after our biggest year over year increase in kids supported in our history.  However, the increase in demand this year has been incredible and, as a result, we anticipate demand to surpass $1.6 million.  This leaves KidSport Calgary facing a potential deficit in excess of $400,000, which means that hundreds of qualified local kids may be left without the support they need.”

After more than 20 years of providing support to local kids and families, KidSport Calgary has helped more than 33,000 kids with sport registration fees and has distributed over $7.9 million to local sport clubs to allow area youth a chance to live out their dreams.
