FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PROVIDING THOUSANDS OF SPORT OPPORTUNITIES TO CALGARY & AREA YOUTH, AN ONGOING PRIORITY FOR KIDSPORT CALGARY

Demand continues to climb, as KidSport Calgary & Area rallies around local families in need of financial assistance.

CALGARY, Alberta. – For KidSport Calgary & Area 2016 was a year of many challenges, some great opportunities and a strong recognition from Calgary and Area supporters that sport matters, every child deserves the chance to play and financial barriers should not get in the way of local kids pursuing their dreams.

“This time last year, we were making some very difficult decisions to ensure we would be in a position to support every qualified child who needed our assistance.  We had to lower our funding, a decision we did not come to easily. However, based on our funding outlook at the time and the increase in demand we were seeing, we made the right choice for 2016.  Since making this decision, we received an outstanding response from our community which led to the addition of some new partners, new fundraising events, new grant support and very strong year-end fundraising totals, thanks in large part to some very substantial and generous contributions from the community,” said Wilson Acton, chair of the KidSport Calgary Board of Directors.

The KidSport Society of Calgary released its 2016 Year in Review on March 23, showcasing the continued positive impact they have had on area youth. This is all made possible thanks to local donors, volunteers, event partners, ambassadors and supporters.  This group continues to make a huge difference in the lives of some of our communities most vulnerable, and for that KidSport Calgary and the families they service are forever grateful.

Highlights of the 2016 Year in Review include:

  • 4,386 kids supported with registration fees into 50 different sports (a year over year increase of 4%), capping off a five-year growth in demand of over 70%).
  • Over $1,12 million distributed to more than 406 different community sport clubs (a decrease from 2015 totals, due to the need to decrease our available funding per child in 2016 from $400 to $250)

“We are extremely proud of our history and the positive difference we are making in the lives of local kids through sport. We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. The amazing response we saw in 2016 allowed us to increase our funding for 2017 to $325 per child, something we are very pleased with as the cost of sport is not declining.” said Acton. “We want to build off this great momentum, and continue to climb toward increasing our available funding per child, all while ensuring we can support every qualified child in our community that needs our assistance to make sport a reality for them. We know that with the continued support of our community, our partners, our donors and our volunteers, this is all possible.”

After more than 21 years of providing support to local kids and families, KidSport Calgary has helped more than 37,000 kids with sport registration fees and has distributed over $8.3 million to local sport clubs to allow area youth a chance to live out their dreams.
