FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KidSport Calgary & Area opened their doors in 1995 with one goal in mind, making it So ALL Kids Can Play!
Today they celebrate 50,000 Kids Assisted!
CALGARY, Alberta – Today marks a huge milestone for the local KidSport chapter servicing Calgary & Area kids, as KidSport Calgary & Area has now supported 50,000 kids. Thanks to the leadership, passion and vision of some great community leaders, volunteers, local donors and partners KidSport became a reality for our community in 1995. That first year, this amazing group of people and organizations provided sport registration fee assistance to 92 local kids to ensure they had a place to play, develop and learn through sport.
Twenty-four years later some of the same people are still involved. They have been joined along the way by hundreds of volunteers, thousand of donors, event partners and sponsor with the same goal, drive and passion for ensuring vulnerable, low income kids in our community are not left on the sidelines, that they have the access to sport they need and deserve.
One of the original people involved was Kathy Salmon who is still involved today as she sits on the Provincial KidSport board. Kathy is a 2-time Olympian, 6-time National Champion, current Principal at the National Sport School and was the inaugural Provincial Director for KidSport in Alberta when the program began operations here in 1995. "KidSport was my way to give back to the community after retiring from competing in10 years of competitive sport. I always wanted to win an international medal in my sport of luge and did not despite trying my very best. Sport helped me to become who I am today and overcome poverty and abuse. I wanted other kids to have the chance to benefit from sport. KidSport is my gold medal and I share it with all the other people who helped make a difference in the lives of so many kids and their families." Said Kathy Salmon, KidSport Ambassador, Volunteer, Donor, Advocate, and Champion!
Today on May 31, 2019 this amazing family has assisted their 50,000th kid through the KidSport program. This is 50,000 kids that have been given the chance to chase their sporting dreams, the chance to meet new friends, meet new role models, develop life skills, learn healthy and active lifestyle habits, build an appreciation for volunteerism and ultimately stumble, laugh, smile and learn through sport, something every child deserves.
“What a truly amazing milestone.” Highlighted Kevin Webster, Executive Director of KidSport Calgary & Area. “This is a testament to the hard work, commitment, care and passion given by every volunteer, board member, ambassador, donor, event partner, community champion and staff member that has been part of this journey. 50,000 local kids lives changed through sport thanks to everyone who has ever put on the yellow T shirt, reviewed a families application, provided sound governance, invested personal time and money, shared their KidSport story, told someone how to apply for assistance, hosted or participated in a fundraising event or proudly included KidSport in their corporate community investment strategy.” “Thank you to you all for ensuring these 50,000 kids had the opportunity to play and be part of the sport community. Sport is something every child should be able to be part of and you have all made this happen for these kids who otherwise may not have had the chance!”
As a 100% community funded charity, KidSport Calgary & Area has invested over $13 million dollars back into our local sport community and economy to support these 50,000 kids and their families. A 24 year history of making sport a reality for families and their kids in Calgary & Area that needed an assist so they could play.
KidSport Calgary & Area is projecting to support over 6,000 local kids with the Gift of Sport in 2019. To meet this demand, they will need to raise over $2.3 million dollars this year.
