Gratitude and impact front and center as KidSport donors, partners and volunteers continue to play a critical role in making sport participation a reality for local youth.

CALGARY, Alberta. – 2017 was a year of significant growth and impact for KidSport Calgary & Area. Every year brings about new challenges and opportunities for the local KidSport chapter here in Calgary. The one thing that remains apparent is a commitment to the youth of our community and the understanding that every child deserves the chance to play and financial barriers should not get in the way of local kids pursuing their sporting dreams.

“4,987 local kids were able to kick a ball, shoot a puck, score a basket, join a team, meet new friends, gain a role model and experience sport thanks to the amazing support of our KidSport Calgary & Area family” Wilson Acton, Board Chair, stated thanking the community. “This is an outstanding accomplishment, and one that we are very humbled, proud and grateful to be able to share today. With the 2018 Olympic Winter games just coming to an end and the 2018 Paralympic Winter games just getting under way, we are seeing just how powerful sport can be.  These amazing stories, role models and leaders in our sport community are giving all our kids the chance to dream.  With the support of our community we will ensure that a family’s financial challenges will not keep them from saying “YES” to their kid’s interest in pursuing those dreams and granting them the access to sport they need and deserve.”

The KidSport Society of Calgary released its 2017 Annual Report on March 13, showcasing the continued positive impact they have on area youth. A network of 1200+ donors, sponsors, volunteers, event partners and ambassadors are the foundation of what makes this impact possible. This amazing group of people and organizations continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of some of our communities most vulnerable, and for that KidSport Calgary and the families they service are forever grateful.

  • 4,987 kids supported with registration fees into 50 different sports (a year over year increase of 13%, representing a five-year growth in demand of 84%)
  • Over $1.46 million distributed to more than 450 different community sport clubs (a 20% increase over 2016)
  • Over $2.0 million dollars raised through local donors, events, sponsors and supporters

“We are motivated and driven by a great history and an every day passion and commitment to ensure no stone is left unturned in bringing sport to life for local kids who need us the most.” highlighted Kevin Webster, Executive Director.  Sport plays a critical role in the lives of local kids and no kid should be left out from experiencing this along with the positive benefits it can bring to their physical and mental well being.  As we forge ahead into 2018 and beyond, our goals remain focused on providing all qualified KidSport kids with the assistance they need.  To do this we will work hard to raise the funds needed to meet the demand from qualified families, we will work to raise additional funds to keep up with the rising costs of sport participation in our community, and we will continue to connect with our community to raise awareness so the families that need our assistance have the knowledge and access to make that happen.  Our strategy in achieving this is to expand our network and to build new relationships while at the same time fostering and stewarding existing relationships that we have within our community, sport partners, donors, event partners, families and volunteers.”

After more than 22 years of providing support to local kids and families, KidSport Calgary has helped more than 42,500 kids with sport registration fee assistance and has distributed over $10.6 million, locally raised dollars, into local sports community and back into our local economy to allow area youth a chance to live out their dreams and play.
